Long hair is a hassle. If you lack the time to style it, use an elastic hairband and casually tie back your hair.

For a casual look, bright colours and lighter washes provide the right touch.

Clean Your Closet

Clean out your closet on a regular basis. A cramped and cluttered closet that is jammed with items you’ll never wear can actually hinder your fashion choices. Sift through your wardrobe, and make two different piles: clothes that flatter, and everything else. A few of the latest trends and items that offer versatility are way better than dingy items from decades past.

Do not trust the size label. Always try your new clothing on in person at the store before buying them. Sizes have no bearing on set measurements anymore. They can vary significantly between different designers, brands, and stores. If you are purchasing items online, make sure you study the sizing charts on the website. Also make sure that each item of clothing that you buy can be returned.

Use a little more gloss on the top lip and you will achieve a popular pouty look. You can make your lips by picking a shade of eye shadow that accentuates your type of lip shade. You can apply a small smudge in the middle of both lips.

What’s Your Body Type?

Coffee Makers
Food & Drink, Home & Garden

Let’s Talk About Coffee Makers

Nothing is better on a cold winter morning than warm and energizing coffee. Nowadays, it seems like there are so many different options for coffee, from trendy cafes to old-school coffee shops. The options are just as diverse for homemade coffee. Enjoy the great taste of coffee from a café in the comfort of home. What follows is an overview of some of the coffee devices available for home use:

Drip Coffee

Drip coffee is the standard home coffee maker option, and various varieties have been on the market for decades. Drip coffee is a fast and reliable to make coffee at home, and is the best if you want to make coffee for a larger group instead of one person. Nowadays, there are also tons of bells and whistles which you might find useful. For example, some come with a separate dispenser for travel mugs, and others even have a built-in bean grinder. Nothing is better than the smell of freshly-ground coffee beans, and there’s no doubt you’ll notice the flavour difference with fresh and fragrant beans.

Single-Serve Coffee Maker

Single-serve coffee makers are the most convenient and quickest way to make a delicious cup of coffee. Keurig and Tassimo are the largest brands on the market.  You buy a box of prepackaged cups which come in many different blends and flavours of coffee, hot chocolate, and tea. Some stores also sell these by the pod/disc/cup, and some compnay have reusable filter cups available. Simply insert the cup, choose your beverage size, and voila. However, if you want to serve a group of people coffee at the same time, you’re better off with a drip maker. And if you drink multiple cups of coffee per day, the cost of prepackaged pods/discs/cups can add up quickly.

Espresso Machines

If you aren’t willing to settle for ordinary coffee, having an espresso machine in your own kitchen produces heavenly results. When you need a quick pick-me-up, a small shot of espresso always does the trick. You can also wow your guests or give your partner a special treat with rich and creamy lattes, café mochas, or cappuccinos. For the best tasting coffee drinks, make sure you get a milk frother attachment to make the most incredible beverages you can imagine. While you may still need a drip machine or single-serve coffee maker for daily use, an espresso machine is a pretty special luxury.

No matter what you choose, you’ll be sipping incredibly flavourful coffee in the comfort of your home in no time.

Toronto Celebrity

Our Favourite Toronto Celebrities

Toronto’s a big city, with more than six million people in the Greater Toronto Area. In such a big city with thriving music, art, movie, and sports scenes, there are a lot of very talented individuals who have gained international fame for their abilities. Here are some of our favourite Toronto celebrities and why they stand out from the crowd:

Jim Carrey

For more than twenty years now, Jim Carrey has been busting our guts with hilarious movies. After a bit of a lull, he returned to what he knows best with Dumb and Dumber To released in the fall of 2014. Carrey was born in Newmarket and raised in Scarborough. He’s a huge Leafs fan, and even wore their iconic blue and white jersey while hosting Saturday Night Live in October. Toronto has a great comedy scene and has produced many talented funnymen, but nobody beats Jim Carrey.

Andrew Wiggins

Wiggins was raised in Thornhill and Vaughan. While there has been a recent surge of Toronto-area basketball players making it big in the NBA, nobody beats the phenomenal Andrew Wiggins. Wiggins highly regarded as a college player, and chose to commit to Kansas. He was the first overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014 and was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the massive Kevin Lowe deal this summer. The son of a former NBA player and former Olympic athlete, Torontonians should be proud to share the same hometown as this talented man.

Steven Stamkos

Stamkos was raised in Unionville and Markham, and was the first overall pick in the 2008 NHL entry draft. Stamkos is arguably the best goalscorer in the NHL. He was kept off the Canadian Olympic team last year due to a brutal broken leg, but he’s arguably the second-best player behind only Sidney Crosby and lights up the league with his incredible sniping abilities. Stamkos only has one more year on his contract after this season…could he come home to the Toronto Maple Leafs? We’d love it!

28-year old Drake was raised in the affluent Forest Hill neighbourhood of Toronto. He has been repping Toronto for more than a decade, first as Jimmy on Degrassi and now as a world-renowned rapper and entertainer. We love Drake because he is proud to come from Toronto and lets the world know about it. He features everything from Shoppers Drug Mart to his old Forest Hill neighbourhood in his music videos. He is an Ambassador for the Toronto Raptors and shares his love for the team all around the world. Plus, it helps to have such a talented artist with sky-high potential representing our great city.

Of course there are so many other talented Toronto celebrities to name, but there’s no doubt these four are our favourites right now!

Winter Jacket

Best of Outdoor Winter Clothing

At the height of Toronto winter, we know it’s important to wear a coat outside. But beyond that, people are split on what outdoor winter accessories are necessary. Do you go for a whole snowsuit with scarf, neckwarmer, toque, and earmuffs just to check the mail? Or just brave the Canadian cold in jeans and a jacket? Well if you want to warm up outside, here are some great winter clothing and accessories options:

Touchscreen Gloves

Have you stood at a bus stop with freezing hands because you were texting, or let the messages pile up in your pocket because you didn’t want to bare your hands to the cold? Well touchscreen gloves are the perfect solution. Thanks to special texture in the fingertips (or all over, on some glove), you can keep your hands warm and still text away or try to beat your Angry Birds record while waiting for the bus.

Sound Toque

Fiddling with little earbuds is no fun in the winter, but bulky headphones don’t fit well over or under a toque. Fortunately, technology these days means you can have your headphones build straight into your toque. This means you won’t need to worry about wires getting tangled up, and you can go for a winter run with your favourite workout tunes.

Winter Boots

You may think you’re too cool for proper winter boots, but when the weather kicks up, a good pair of winter boots can make all the difference. Proper winter boots keep your feet dry in snow and rain, have grip to protect you when you walk on ice or freezing rain, and keep your toes warm as the temperatures drop into double digit minuses.

Heated Jacket

You’ll be the envy of everyone outdoors if you get a heated jacket. Not only are they waterproof and well-insulated, they have rechargeable batteries which will keep you warm in the coldest of weather. Amazingly, the batteries can also be used to charge your cellphone, so not only is this jacket a luxury, it can save your life if you get stuck in the elements. Keep your body temperature up and your cellphone charged to call for emergency help if you get trapped outdoors.

Toronto winters are never easy. But with great winter clothing and accessories, you can be toasty warm and actually enjoy some of the great things Toronto has to offer in the cold and frosty winter months.

Best of Toronto in the Winter

Toronto is one of the best places in the world for outdoor winter activities. With more skating rinks than you shake a stick at, incredible hills on which to sled, and even world-class ski resorts just a couple hours outside of the city, Toronto is the place to be for winter sports enthusiasts. Here are some of our favourite Toronto-area winter activities:

Ice Skating at Nathan Phillips Square

Located in the heart of downtown Toronto, surrounded by towering skyscrapers and the modern architecture of City Hall, this is a great place to make cherished memories with your kids or just skate around with friends and family. Because it’s the shining jewel of Toronto’s rink system, it’s always very well maintained and has the longest open season of any rink in Toronto. You’ll have to go elsewhere to play hockey and live out the dream of Canadian kids everywhere, but for a nice winter lap there’s no place better. Two hour skate rentals cost $10 per adult.

Centennial Park Ski & Snowboarding

Etobicoke’s expansive Centennial Park is home to a Ski & Snowboard Centre. With facilities for all ages and skill levels, you can take introductory classes to learn about the sport. If you’re an advanced skiier or snowboarder, you can practice your skills and stay fit during the winter. There is even a competitive racing program. North Yorth’s Earl Bales Centre is also host to similar facilities, so no matter where you live in Toronto, you have access to amazing ski & snowboard training without even having to leave the city.

Cross-Country Skiing

Toronto is a great place for this tamer yet difficult cousin of alpine skiing. If you have your own equipment and just want a quick route, trails in High Park can give you a taste of nature without leaving the city. Vaughn is home to Kortright Trail, a short 5km with affordable admission. For cross-country skiing veterans who want a longer trek, Albion Hills conservation area has 26km of trails for not only cross-country, but also snowshoeing, tobogganing, and a skating area.

Of course, your nearby neighbourhood park is probably a great place for ice skating, hockey, sledding, and maybe an impromptu snowball fight. The outdoor winter possibilities in Toronto are endless!

Winter Safety in Toronto

We’re at the height of winter in Toronto, with chilly temperatures, heavy snowfalls, and gusty winds. Outdoor accidents can be deadly at this time of year, so it is very important to take precautions. Here are some tips to stay safe this winter:

Bundle Up

Even if you don’t actually expect to be out in the elements for long, it is paramount that you dress for the worst-case scenario. You could be driving to drop someone off and not expect to leave your car. But a stall or engine failure, very common in freezing temperatures, could leave you stranded for hours in the cold. So no matter your plans, make sure to dress with a warm coat, boots, hat, and gloves at all occasions. Scarves and neckwarmers are recommended, but the two most important items are undoubtedly a coat to protect your core and a hat to protect heat loss from your head.

Emergency Supplies

Make sure your car has a winter survival kit at all times. You never know when a snow squall or black ice will bring highway driving to a halt, or when freezing temperatures will prevent your car from starting. A winter survival kit should have blankets, non-perishable food like energy bars, water, extra clothing, a small snow kit (shovel, scraper, brush), flashlight, candles, a whistle, and a road map. Make sure to replace the water every six months, and replenish supplies as necessary. Hopefully you’ll never have to use your winter survival kit, but better safe than sorry.

Wear Suitable Footwear

All too often we think we can get away with wearing sneakers all year long. While it certainly saves money, this is a dangerous practice that can cause real harm when bad weather strikes. Proper winter boots, with strong traction and water resistance, can protect you from slips on the ice, and can keep your feet dry in deep snow or slushy weather. Wet shoes and socks are a recipe for hypothermia and frostbite. Proper footwear that keeps you dry and sturdy in tough winter weather is very important.

Be Smart

If it is particularly vicious weather, with freezing rain, black ice, or snow squalls, consider whether an outdoor trek is necessary. If your trip can be delayed or cancelled, then do so. Safety is more important than most tasks. If you absolutely must head out, be sure to consolidate your tasks to avoid driving all over the GTA. Drive slowly and safely, exercise extreme caution with limited visibility, and beware of pedestrians. Stay safe this winter, Torontonians!

Toronto New Year
Music, Politics, Sports, Toronto News

Best & Worst of 2014 in Toronto

It’s hard to believe, but with New Year’s Eve just days away, it’s almost time to close the books on 2014. It was a memorable and eventful year, to be sure, and we always hope for better in 2015. With another year almost passed, here is at look back at some of the highlights and lowlights of 2014 in Toronto:

The lowlight of Toronto politics in 2014 doesn’t take much guesswork: everything surrounding Rob Ford in any and all manner and action. Even though his brother Doug Ford ran in the mayoral election, the considerable shadow of Rob hung over the whole affair. Therefore, it makes sense to make the political highlight of 2014 the mayoral election, which saw John Tory elected mayor of Toronto over Doug Ford and Olivia Chow. Tory won more than 40% of the popular vote, a plurality that ensured a new face for Toronto politics and the end of an embarrassing era that put Toronto on the world stage for all the wrong reasons.

Though it happened in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the highlight of Toronto sports might have happened on January 1, 2014, the very first possible day. On that day, the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Detroit Red Wings in a shootout to win the 2014 Winter Classic by a 3-2 scoreline. While it may not seem like much, it makes a good case as the highlight of Toronto sports in 2014. However, we give this one to the Toronto Raptors. They made the playoffs for the first time since 2007-08, and though they lost in seven games to the Brooklyn Nets, they have followed it up with a fantastic start to the 2014-15 season. The Raptors are currently first in the Atlantic division and third in the entire NBA! As for lowlights…Maple Leafs and Argonauts miss the playoffs, Blue Jays barely above .500…take your pick.

Toronto native Drake continued to represent Toronto well, serving as Ambassador for the Toronto Raptors and touring the world. He even hosted Saturday Night Live in January. His album Nothing Was the Same was shortlisted for the 2014 Polaris Music Prize, a ceremony that was hosted in Toronto. Overall, he deserves the highlight. Musical lowlight? Prince no-showing for a rumoured November concert wasn’t great, but Justin Bieber takes the cake. He’s not a Toronto resident or native, but bad things seem to happen when Bieber and Toronto collide.
